Falls are one of the top causes of injuries among seniors. Seniors can experience broken bones, hip fractures, and head injuries because of falling. Even if a fall does not result in a severe injury, older adults may develop anxiety and become fearful, making it challenging for them to live their lives to the fullest. Hence, having a caregiver to monitor their actions and assist them daily is a plus.
If you have a senior loved one, helping them avoid falling is one of the ways to promote their health and independence. With that said, our home health care in California has listed some fall prevention tips:
- Get rid of clutter. Senior’s home or your abode, if they are living with you- must be kept clean and tidy. Any clutter should be removed, especially if these are near staircases or hallways.
- Take care of tripping hazards. Inspect each room and hallway. Are there loose carpets, suspicious-looking floorboards, or slippery throw rugs? Either get these fixed, buy replacements, or have them removed entirely.
- Ensure proper lighting. Your loved one may not have the same eyesight they used to. Thus, install brighter lights in areas- such as stairways and hallways. Also, add night lights in their bedroom and bathroom to help them see better in the evening.
- Place grab bars and handrails. These devices will help seniors go up and down stairs, step in and out of the bathroom, and use the toilet with less effort. Install these to keep them from injuring themselves.
